Sometimes it’s difficult to look at our businesses objectively. We become so involved in the day-to-day functions that we can often lose sight of the big picture. Luckily, there are bloggers out there to bring us back to reality.
This recent post from a freelance writer gives a fairly harsh review of creative staffing firms. I know that sometimes it’s hard to look in the mirror but in order to stay competitive, sometimes it needs to be done.
Why I’ve Lost Faith in Creative Staffing Agencies
Take Home: Every staffing firm, creative or not, should take a step back and think about their business from time to time. What would your candidates say about your organization? You don’t even need to wonder, an anonymous candidate survey should give you a candid look at your reputation.

What was most interesting to me about the article was the amount of misinformation being discussed by freelance creatives in regard to how staffing agencies work. Many (but not all) believe that the difference between the pay and bill rate is all profit for the staffing agency. Only one person correctly pointed out that if you add in the payroll taxes, benefits, and the cost of marketing yourself, the compensation paid by the staffing agency is about equal to what freelancers earn.
The lesson: staffing firms need to educate candidates (and clients) on how staffing services work!
